St Anthony's School - Term 1 Week 10 2021
Principal's News.....
Thank you to the parents, students and staff of St Anthony’s. Without you all working together in partnership, St Anthony’s would not be the amazing place it is!
Once again, Covid 19 threw an interesting curve ball into our last week of term. Thank you to the co-operation of parents keeping their children home who have visited Greater Brisbane recently. It’s important at this time that we all follow the most recent health advice.
Continue to check the Parent Portal over the holiday break for any updates.
Over the holiday period, we have an upgrade happening with our fire hydrant system on the oval. This will involve the installation of a concrete hardstand at the base of the hydrant and the installation of geoweb from our back gate to the fire hydrant and the installation of turf over the top of the geoweb. This is to provide a hard surface should a fire engine need to enter the school grounds to access the fire hydrant. This is required for our fire hydrant system to be compliant with today’s regulations. This work should take place in the second week of the school holiday period.
Thank you to those families who usually access PCYC Vacation Care, for your understanding. This service had to be cancelled over this holiday period due to the health and safety considerations during the completion of these works.
Parent Portal
It is exciting that we have had 156 parents access our Parent Portal. We strongly encourage anyone who hasn't signed in to do so ASAP as from the beginning of next term, all correspondence between school and home will be via the Portal. We will continue to use Facebook as promotion and publicity but we will no longer engage SkoolBag.
NAPLAN
In Week 1, Term 2, students in Years 3 and 5 will partake in a Writing and Omnibus NAPLAN practice test. The purpose of the testing is to familiarise students with the software, test environment and style of NAPLAN questions. Student names and results will not be recorded during the practice tests.
Students in Year 3 will use the school iPads and in Year 5, students will use laptops for each testing session. For more information about NAPLAN, including fact sheets, FAQs and examples of NAPLAN questions, please visit www.nap.edu.au.y
NAPLAN testing will take place in Week 4 of Term 2.

APRE News.....
Here we are, ready and waiting for the onset of Holy Week. This is THE most important item in the Christian Calendar. I hope you are able to take time over the next few weeks and really explore the story of Easter with your children. It is a very complex one filled with injustice, despair and sadness, yet it finishes with such hope. Recently, a presenter at a formation day I was attending said to the group (and it has stuck), “without Good Friday, there can’t be an Easter Sunday.” I guess we need to remain faithful throughout our personal ‘Good Friday’ experiences and know that God is with us and provides a hope-filled Easter Sunday. It really is a lot to comprehend, isn’t it?!
As we start to draw towards the end of this Holy season of Lent, and prepare for Easter, it is important for us to stop and reflect on our thoughts and behaviours. Lent is a time of simplicity; a time when we can do a little ‘stocktake’ on ourselves and look for ways to become more like Jesus and to make a little difference to those around us. Here are eight FREE gifts you can try:
THE GIFT OF LISTENING…
But you must REALLY listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming,
no planning your response. Just listening.
THE GIFT OF AFFECTION…
Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and handholds. Let these
small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends.
THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER…
Clip cartoons, share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say
“I love to laugh with you.”
THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE…
It can be a simple “Thanks for your help” note or a full sonnet. A brief, handwritten note
may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life.
THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT…
A simple and sincere, “You look great in red,” “You did a super job” or
“That was a wonderful meal” can make someone’s day.
THE GIFT OF A FAVOUR
Every day, go out of your way to do something kind.
THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE…
There are times when we want nothing better than to be left alone.
Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others.
THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION…
The easiest way to feel good is to a extend a kind word to someone;
really, it’s not that hard to smile and say “hello” or “thank you”.
Caritas Project Compassion
Thank you to all the students and families who contributed to the Caritas Project Compassion appeal through donations for free dress, zooper doopers and contributions to the Caritas money boxes. We have raised $367.05 which will be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy every Easter blessing and I look forward to seeing you all again in Term 2.

Middle Leader News
Thank you to all the parents that took up the opportunity to attend Parent/Teacher interviews over the last week. A common question asked and encouraged when learning at St Anthony’s is ‘what does success look like?’ If students, or indeed anyone learning something new, do not know what they are working towards then it is very easy to lose your way. If we reflect upon the term for our students we can consider what a successful term would look like. My success criteria would include that students:
- are happy, settled and engaged in their classrooms,
- feel safe, and that they belong in their learning community.
- know where they are at in their learning journey
- are clear in their goals for where they are headed
- are challenged and supported to succeed
During the last weeks, all staff conducted termly Review and Response meetings where they reflected upon the questions above with the leadership team. As a staff we continue to strive to ensure that we are clear on what success looks like for all students and staff at St Anthony’s.
I wish all students, families, and staff a refreshing Easter break. It has been a big, busy term. I pray that Covid does not interrupt many plans, and we come back ready to be a community of successful learners in Term 2.

Prep KJ & SJ
Thank you to all the parents who came to support and cheer us on at our first Cross Country. We were very proud of the Prep children as they ran their hardest around the oval. It’s crazy to believe we are now in the last week of term. It has been a fantastic first term as the children have settled into their classes, got to know one another, the routines and expectations and become more independent. It’s been great to see children kiss their mums, dads or grandparents goodbye in the mornings and come into the classroom on their own and carry out their jobs. With Easter approaching, we have been learning about the Easter Story, focusing on Palm Sunday, the last supper, Jesus’s death on the cross and his resurrection. This week we are also having lots of fun making Easter baskets, making beautiful Easter cards and colourful and decorative Easter Bunny hats. Parent/Teacher interviews have taken place and we thank you for taking time out of your busy day to catch up with us regarding your child’s progress. It has been exciting to see just how far we have come. Thank you again, to everyone for your help and support this term. We hope that you have a relaxing break with your families and a safe and blessed Easter. See you in Term 2!!

Week 10, we made it!
1RW has worked extremely hard this term and especially over the last two weeks. We have been completing assessment to finish up our math and English units. Students drafted, edited, and published a retell of their favourite 'Pig the Pug' book. I was really impressed to see the growth that all students have made within their writing. Each student has their own writing goal that they are focusing on and this will continue into next term. Examples of these are using capital letters and full stops in the right places as well as including finger spaces and making sure that our sentences make sense. We have also had a big focus on editing our work and checking it before bringing it to me to mark. Students can look at the 'writing bump it up' wall to see how they can improve thier writing. Next term we will have a big focus on information reports about Australian animals and I look forward to seeing how that goes. I wish you all the best over the Easter break. Please stay safe, especially if (hopefully we get to) travelling. Thank you for all your support this term and I really enjoyed seeing parents last week at Parent/Teacher interviews. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Yr 2 OT
Well that's a wrap for Term One. It was fantastic to meet so many parents at our parent teacher interviews. We celebrated the end of term and Mr Tattam’s birthday with a little party. Thanks for an awesome term 2OT. Have a happy and safe holiday - see you.

Yr 2/3 VN
What a term for 2/3VN. I am so proud of the class that has worked so hard to become a class of learners. Every single day we set expectations of our classroom being filled with learners and I can honestly say that is what we have. Every student has taken the chance to start a fresh and come into the new year with high expectations of themselves, their friends and the class as a whole. It makes our job easy; it means our days are filled with learning and building positive relationships. Thank you for the continued strong communication and support between home and school. Enjoy your break; however it may look.

Yr 3 RM
Welcome to the end of term. We have been very busy finalising things and are ready for a break. In Maths we have continued with addition with regrouping and most children are grasping this concept. In English, we have been working on persuasive writing. In Religion and HASS we have examined how Easter is celebrated around the world, comparing how these events are similar and different. Have a great holiday. See you all after the break.

Yr 4 SC
What an amazing Term 1! 4SC worked hard all term to be the best students they could be. We loved our History unit about the Industrial Revolution and the First Fleet. We planted our broad beans. Hopefully we will get a crop during Term 2. Check out the photo of Jack and the beanstalk! It was so much fun writing and creating our Book Creator stories for Prep. We aim to make our writing 'radiant' and are working on our editing skills. In Mathematics, times tables and patterns are a challenge. Hopefully we will learn them over the holidays. What an amazing effort by all at the Cross Country! 'You Can do It' has given us some tools to get to know ourselves better and to build positive relationships with our peers. Wishing you all an Easter filled with many blessings. God Bless. Mrs Cox

With No Sound
In a dark cold desert in the middle of Australia,
There was no sound.
It was just as quiet as it could be.
I wish that it could be fun again.
People have been fighting for a long time.
My family had left with a bunch of strangers all around us.
And we hope we will survive. Fighting brave and fighting strongly through the bad times.
I wish the world could be normal again.
One day I woke up.
A bright morning came and finally we felt the breeze and saw the sunshine.
It felt like things never happened before.

Dear Families,
It was great to chat with parents about your number one topic – your child!! Parent/Teacher interviews are always very beneficial and enlightening!
Eleanor’s Book Stall: It has been impressive and heartwarming to see the kindness and enthusiasm as Eleanor brought in loads of her books to sell as a fundraiser for Caritas. Eleanor raised $21.85 by selling her books and is to be commended for her outstanding Lenten act of thoughtfulness and caring.
What stuck with me Term 1?
Estar: Arriving at Saint Anthony’s in Week 2, I have learned that you never give up. It was very good to make new friends.
Tanek: I learned that the steam train and the Industrial Revolution made lots of people lose their jobs and become robbers and went Van Diemen’s Land.
Phoebe: I learned that back in the olden days, London used to be a disaster and that there were too many criminals. They got all the criminals and put them in a boat so they could go out of their sight.
Marcus: I learned about the History of Australia back in the 1700’s. My favourite time this term was going swimming.
Xavier: It was a hard term because all of the rain and swimming. All up, the cross country was the hardest.
Pyper: I learned that if at first you can’t do it, you can. For example, in Maths when there were hard times tables.
Isla: I learned that times and division is hard for some people. I have improved my maths even though it’s hard.
Ethan: I have improved my writing this term. It was good when I finished cross country.
Cedar: I enjoyed Sport, especially the Cross Country.
Tyarnh: At Saint Anthony’s I have done hard work and running. I was happy because I came 4th in Cross Country.
Sharna: I like sport and swimming and cross country. Cross country was the hardest.
We appreciate your valued support and wish you every blessing for Easter!
Kind regards,
Robyn and Barbara.

Yr 5/6 TN
Well, it hasn’t been the end to the term that we would have wished for, but what a wonderful Term 1, 2021 we have had. I am very proud of the way both the Year 5 and 6 students work together and the level of leadership that we are seeing from all the students.
Everyone has worked very hard on religion, science, English and HASS assessments and although we didn’t get all our testing completed, we will hit the ground running next term and finish off some of our exciting projects, like the Year 5 election.
Thank you to everyone that made the time to come and speak to me about your amazing children, it is a delight to be able to share with you their successes and their future goals.
Until next term, please stay safe and enjoy the time you have with family over this Easter break.

YR 6 LW
We had planned to finish our English information reports on Asian animals this week, but with the unexpected Covid-related absenteeism, this task will run into the first week of next term to ensure that everyone is able to complete it. Fortunately, we have completed our chance and data maths investigation, as well as our HASS and Science assessments. I’m proud of the way every student has willingly put themselves in the learning pit – striving to master new skills and challenge themselves to do their personal best.
As this week is Holy Week, a lot of our attention has been focused on understanding The Stations of the Cross and the message of Easter. Thank you for all your support throughout this first term. I hope that you have a safe and relaxing Easter break with your families.
