St Anthony's Outside School Hours Care
Principal's Report
Welcome to our week 4 newsletter………good gracious, we’re nearly half way through Term 2 if you can believe that??
Here at St Anthony’s, we constantly remind, model and teach our behaviour expectations just as we teach curriculum areas. One of our behaviour expectations is ‘showing respect for ourselves, others and the environment’. One of the ways we show respect to each other is through displaying manners. Manners are something used every day to make a good impression on others and to feel good about oneself. No matter where you are - at home, work, or with friends - practicing good manners is important.
Good manners are more than opening doors and writing thank you notes. While opening doors for others and writing notes is nice, true courtesy goes deeper. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling.
If you practice good manners, you are showing those around you that you are considerate of their feelings and respectful. You are also setting standards for others' behavior and encouraging them to treat you with similar respect.
We often have to model for our students here at school when spoken to ‘Good morning…….’ A courteous and appropriate response is ‘Good morning Mrs/Mr………..’. even when answering the classroom telephone, an appropriate way to answer the phone is to say…Good morning Year 3 Gold, Jack speaking’.
If you require an item to be opened during lunch…an appropriate address is, ‘Could you please open this for me Mr/Mrs……….’
When 2 people are speaking, one may interrupt by saying ‘excuse me’ or waiting until the conversation has finished. These may seem like such basic skills but we often have to remind students of these and other possible scenarios on a regular basis. You can assist at home by seizing opportunities to model appropriate manners also.
PARENT PARTNERSHIP FORUM
Thank-you to everyone who came along to our Parent Partnership Forum AGM and gathering last Tuesday evening. Our numbers were significantly low, with sadly no new faces.
I am very excited to announce that Seamus Delahunty has been elected our new Chairperson and we had no nominations for the position of secretary, so Katie Rub has very kindly offered to stay in this position until the end of the year. Thank-you Seamus and Katie!
At each Parent Partnership Forum meeting a financial report is prepared and shared with those in attendance. At Tuesday’s meeting, we had some discussion around funding items on the staff wishlist and the PPF are funding some new interactive items for the Prep Peace Garden, some shelving, scanners and new chairs for the library and a new fancy line marker for our school. We thank the PPF for their ongoing support for resourcing the school in many and varied ways.
Families are the first educators of their children and they continue to influence their children’s learning and development during the school years and long afterwards. Schools have an important responsibility in helping to nurture and teach future generations and families trust schools to provide educational foundations for their children’s future. At the same time, schools need to recognise the primary role of the family in education. This is why it is important for families and schools to work together in partnership. Research demonstrates that effective schools have high levels of parental and community involvement. This involvement is strongly related to improved student learning, attendance and behaviour. Family involvement can have a major impact on student learning, regardless of the social or cultural background of the family. Family involvement in schools is therefore central to high quality education and is part of the core business schools. I strongly encourage parents to consider being a part of our active PPF group. Anyone is welcome to come along to our gatherings.
We warmly invite all St Anthony’s Families to our ‘Family Movie Night’ on Friday, 2nd June commencing at 5.30pm in our Sport’s Centre. A Microsoft Form for ordering pizza and garlic bread is on the portal. All pizzas must be pre-ordered and paid for by Tuesday 30th May. Popcorn, lollies and drinks are available for purchase on the night and the movie commences at 6.30pm. Wear your warm and comfy PJ’s and we hope to see you there!!
Attending such events contributes to building and nurturing our wonderful school community.
Digital Technology
I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents about remaining vigilant while your child is using personal devices and social media.
We cannot deny the positive advantages of digital technology, including the ability to connect and communicate with each other around the world and the ease with which various applications make life easier, not to mention the creative ways we can transform teaching and learning. However digital technology does present challenges. Children are exposed to words, images, and material that can be seductive. They are vulnerable to harm and violence online just as they are in the physical world. Thus, children's technology use needs to be managed and monitored.
Popular applications such as Snapchat and TikTok, require its users to be over 13 years of age. Hence, these apps are not appropriate for our primary school children. Don’t be afraid to set expectations and boundaries around technology use – their online reputation needs to be protected. It is never too late to start adding rules. Keep devices out of the bedroom – children need sleep. Devices can be charged in another room and alarms can be bought that do not have access to the internet. Remind older siblings to not share or expose younger children in the family to content or applications not suitable.
The benefits for your child to gain information and entertainment so easily must be positive and truly developmental, otherwise, we have let them down. Parents and carers need to be fully aware of the content and the amount of time children spend pursuing these opportunities.
For more information about child safety online please visit https://www.police.qld.gov.au/safety-and-preventing-crime/personal-safety/childrens-safety/whos-chatting-to-your-kids
Mobile Technology
At school, to avoid distraction from learning and the possibility of loss or damage to personal devices, all mobile phones and smart watches that can access the internet, send and receive texts, and take photos etc, must be handed in to the office upon arrival. They can then be collected from the office prior to leaving the school grounds at the conclusion of the school day.
Day for Dolly – Friday 12th May
Tomorrow, Friday 12th May, students are encouraged to wear blue and bring a gold coin to raise awareness for this important cause. Day for Dolly is an opportunity to remind students the importance of showing kindness towards everyone, a value that our foundress, Nano Nagle showed in her life.
St Anthony’s Sporting Superstars
A BIG congratulations to Callum P and Jordan T who have qualified to represent Central Zone at the Darling Downs Cross Country Trials on May 16. We are super proud of you, Callum and Jordan!!
Happy Mother’s Day
Here’s wishing all St Anthony’s mums and those significant people who play the role of mum, a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday! I hope you enjoy your special gifts that were so carefully and lovingly chosen at our Mother’s Day stall today.
"Life doesn’t come with a manual; it comes with a mother”.
Mother’s Day should remind us to stop and thank our mothers and grandmothers for the part they play in our lives. I have been blessed with a truly remarkable mother. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for my mum. Advice regarding parenting… call mum. A cup of tea and chat on my way home from school…..call mum. That stubborn stain that won’t budge off my favourite shirt….call mum. A cake made for a morning tea….call mum. A shoulder to cry on… call mum. A child that has an appointment after school……call mum. The list is endless. I hope you get to spend time with your mothers this Mother’s Day. What do you love most about your mum? For me, it’s spending time together doing the things we enjoy.
“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a while and their hearts forever”
Next week, I am attending the Term 2 Principal’s Forum in Charleville and Katie Hauser will be deputising in my absence.
Until next newsletter…..God Bless!
Louise
The newsletter will be an e newsletter emailed to parents on a Thursday every fortnight. Community and parent notices can still be included in the newsletter by emailing the item to the school stanthonys@twb.catholic.edu.au.

Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Mothers and female role models within our community. What a special morning it was last Friday to see all the Mothers who were able to attend the breakfast and those who could come to the Prayer Assembly, beautifully led by 3 Gold. It was a thoughtful expression of gratitude for all the mothers and mother figures in our community. We were reminded that the expression of a Mothers love, the way they nurture and care for us, helps us to understand what God is like.
A Mother's Love
There are times when only a mother's love
Can understand our tears,
Can soothe our disappoints
And calm all of our fears.
There are times when only a mother's love
Can share the joy we feel
When something we've dreamed about
Quite suddenly is real.
There are times when only a mother's faith
Can help us on life's way
And inspire in us the confidence
We need from day to day.
For a mother's heart and a mother's faith
And a mother's steadfast love
Were fashioned by the angels
And sent from God above.
Parish Family Mass
Thank you to the families who attended Parish family mass last Sunday. St Anthony’s Parish is a welcoming and inclusive community with it’s vision of ‘a place at the table for all.’ Every weekend there are two masses that you are always welcome to attend, 6pm on Saturday night and 8.30am Sunday morning. The families who support Parish family mass, provide a wonderful element to the celebration and are very valueable members of this welcoming community. Parish family masses are held on the first Sunday of every month.
Sacramental Program
We continue to keep in our thoughts and prayers the students travelling along their sacramental journey; Campbell, Penny, Noah, Elbrix, Elouise, Archie, Jaxson. These students will make their Confirmation on Wednesday the 21st of June at 5.30pm in the church. Just a reminder to those students that there are catch ups scheduled every Wednesday from 3.30-4pm or after Sunday Mass at 10 – 10.30am in the Parish office leading up to the confirmation date.
Fixed mindset
“I can’t! It’s too hard. I am not good at that. I don’t like doing this, so I don’t.” Do you hear your child saying these kinds of phrases? It is not uncommon! Many adults may say these sorts of things as well, I know I certainly have at different times of my life. When a child’s mindset is fixed like this it is incredibly difficult for them to engage in their learning as they are seeing things in absolutes, they either can, or they can’t. Our focus on the St Anthony’s Way touchstone of ‘be persistent’ this term is a way for us to tap into students’ thinking and behaviour and develop their ability to recognize when tasks become uncomfortable; seeing this an opportunity to ‘push through’. As caring adults charged with the responsibility of a child’s learning and wellbeing, at times it may seem easier to let a child escape that uncomfortable feeling and give into their negative, fixed self-talk. This proves to be a short-term fix, for a long-term problem. Research would show that an important way to build a child’s persistence is to help them understand the normal reaction of uncomfortableness when there is a struggle and to acknowledge this as an important step in growth.
Some steps parents could take to build a child’s persistence include;
- Praise children’s efforts. Encourage and celebrate their efforts and improvements rather than focus solely on the outcome, especially when things don’t go as planned.
- Model positive self-talk. Show your children how to talk positively to themselves by using positive affirmations and self – talk in your own life.
- Encourage children’s efforts to problem solve. Support them with brainstorming solutions and developing independence with creative solutions.
- Help your children develop a growth mindset by emphasizing that skills and abilities can be learned and improved over time with practice and effort.
- Celebrate and normalise mistakes. Encourage your children to view mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures or a measure of how they are lacking.
Along with the other touchstones on the St Anthony’s Way ‘love of learning’ pathway, persistence is a skill for life. The earlier we can make the connection between effort and progress, the sooner children will understand the power they have in their learning journey.
Performing Arts
I am very excited to be able to share details regarding the exciting venture planned by the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office this term! The Office has invited schools from right across our Diocese to come together in a huge celebration of The Arts from Monday 19 to Thursday 22 June.

Prep White & Prep Blue
Welcome to week four!
In Prep we have been busily learning about our Australian Animals in a variety of ways including picture books, information reports and videos. We also have been speaking about what the animal needs to survive – sleep, food, water and shelter.
We have also spoken about memories that are special to us, including catching a spider in a bucket, getting bogged on the beach and going to the beach.
Hope you all stay well.
Katelyn and Siobhan
Yr 1 Blue
Over the past fortnight, as a part of our literacy study, we read stories and gathered information about Australian animals, especially wombats and kangaroos. Hopefully, the children have been giving you some insight into these native Australian marsupials e.g., physical characteristics, diet, and the environments in which they live.
Over the coming weeks, the students will start to write simple reports on an Australian animal. We’ve had great fun learning about Australian animals and we look forward to seeing this learning in their written reports.
Library books are returned Thursday so the class may borrow four readers and two free-choice books on Friday. Ideally, class teachers would like to see each child borrow on a weekly basis.
In Maths, the class has created a 100 board and various number lines (0-10, 0-20 & 0-100), involving the skills to sequence numbers and number families and, identifying number names and patterns. The students also have used the 0-20 number line to write and solve simple addition and subtraction.
During Religion and HASS, we’ve identified various days of significance and where they are celebrated at home, school, and/or church. This has led nicely into the importance of Anzac Day and the Sacrament of Baptism. This week, all of us are looking forward to Mrs Daniells’ return to the classroom.
Emma Daniells and Jo Keleher
Year 1 White
Hello to all parents and carers.
The Term 2 Overview will be out shortly on the portal. Please feel free to email any queries you may have, or if you have anything at home that relates to what we are doing, we would love to have a look at them and discuss them.
Lately in Maths, the students have been exploring 3D objects and their attributes. And with many thanks, one of the students even brought in some objects from their home that we were able to explore and discuss. This made the topic even more relatable as the students were able to see different objects from around the house that are 3D.
In English during Shared Reading, we have been using our skills in ‘predicting’ words in stories, coming up with words to finish sentences off, discussing whether they “make sense” and completing the story. The students have become quite engaged in this lesson, often discussing between themselves what word makes sense and needs to be used to complete the sentence.
During our Zones of Regulation sessions, we have been discussing “what it takes to be a friend” following the St Anthony’s Way and how we can be inclusive and kind to all peers and teachers. We also talk about the Zones of Regulation each morning in our Welcome Circle, discussing our feelings as well as talking about ‘how our body actually feels’ when we are in a particular zone, as well as how we can help ourselves, or get support, to get back to ‘the green zone’ and ready to learn. The students have been enjoying these sessions and it can challenge them to think about how ‘they really feel’.
In the coming weeks we shall be looking at some non fiction books and compare them to fiction stories as we prepare to write an information report based on Australian Animals.
Till next time

Yr 2 White
It has been a very exciting time in Year 2 White with the addition of Miss Hooper. The class has enjoyed getting to know her. Miss Hooper will be with us until 29th of May doing her teaching prac placement. She will be taking small lessons, before working up to an entire week of teaching the class!
In English, we have continued working on our fairy tales by creating our own characters and setting. In Maths, fractions are our focus, and we are enjoying playing several fun fraction games. Science has seen us investigating an animal’s life cycle and using technology to research. I am looking forward to seeing the finished products.
Until next time
Nicole
Yr 2/3 Blue
Hello again from 2/3 Blue.
We have been busily learning about celebrations and commemorations and enjoyed doing a little research about the Drayton Memorial after ANZAC Day. We will continue to explore many of the celebrations that occur throughout the year as part of our HASS.
We have also moved onto discussing Non-Fiction Texts and will be writing a report about a topic of our own choice later in the term …. Be prepared … it could be a bumpy ride with lots of questions and requests for photos or pictures of the topic coming your way from your child!!
In Maths we are continuing our study of numbers and operations – with the introduction of multiplications for Yr 2 and lots of practise of our facts in both Yr 2 & Yr 3! Science this term is the study of Materials and Matter and we are looking forward to lots of experiments to help us decide what materials are best suited to particular jobs .. eg. Does a Raincoat need to have special properties for it to work properly?
Congratulations to Jonathan and Lilly for your awards for Kindness and persistence at Assembly on Friday!
I hope that all of our lovely Mothers, and those who are like mother’s to us, have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday! Enjoy your day and your little gifts from your 2/3 Blue cherub!
Yr 4/5 White
Yr 4/5 Blue
Sometimes, things just line up! Like now in HASS/History we are exploring and reflecting upon the happenings and events from the landing of the First Fleet to Federation, through to the Gold Rush. While in Religion we are looking at the history of the Catholic Church in Australia. It is amazing to see how these events align. As a class we are currently constructing a HUGE timeline, which is colour coded into History events and Religious events so that we can have a very clear visual of our country’s history.
Time, time, time! At the moment in Mathematics, we are looking at all things time. How to tell the time, how to use time as a form of measurement, converting time between 12- and 24 hour, lapsed time, time tables… You made it we are counting it! Time is a tricky concept and one that we are going to need to put lots of ‘time’ and effort into. Can I please encourage you all at home to be speaking about time! What is the time? How long until we leave? How long will it take if we are going to arrive at 4pm? This will support the students in making time a part of their every day language.
Homework: now that all of our short weeks are over, I would like to begin homework again. Last term I did however, waste a lot of photocopying by creating class sets of homework for only a few to complete it. This term homework will be offered to the students each week. If you would like your child added to the list and believe that they might be telling me something different, please send me an email and I will ensure homework is coming home weekly.
Until next time, stay warm!
Mrs Terri-An Nolan
Yr 4/5 Gold
Currently 4/5 Gold is examining information texts in English- specifically, learning how to effectively conduct research and take dot points. We’re also learning how to turn our research into an original and interesting report.
After spending some time learning about money and working within a budget, we’re going to shift our attention to mastering multiplication and division with larger numbers in Maths.
Australia’s colonial past, including the impact on the indigenous people is our current focus in HASS, which will lead into a research task soon. In Science, we’re exploring the properties of natural and processed materials and will be learning the differences between solids, liquids and gasses.
Please note that I will be on leave from Wednesday 10th May, returning on Thursday 10th June. Mrs Barbara Hair will be in our classroom at this time – welcome Mrs Hair!
She can be contacted at Barbara.Hair@twb.catholic.edu.au
Did somebody say holiday??
Yr 6 Blue
Week 4 has seen us get extremely busy with our learning!
We are learning all about Narratives this term. We have explored how we can successfully create settings and characters within our writing. We are getting so much better at creating exciting sentences to build suspense within our writing too!
Science has been hands on this term. We are exploring reversible and irreversible changes. During Religion lessons, we have investigated Scriptural texts to see how Jesus' relationship with God the Father and humanity is described.
Miss Paterson has taught us so much about measurement conversions and how to find the area of shapes over the last couple of weeks too! We have moved through the learning pit in these lessons and have developed a positive growth mindset. We hope all the mothers and special women in our lives have a wonderful Mother’s Day this Sunday.
Until next time,
Mrs Kingsford, Miss Paterson and Year 6.

Learning Support
In the Learning Support Team there are three Learning Support Teachers; Leona Doherty, Ann Foster and Terri-An Nolan. Terri-An is new to the team. She is working one day a fortnight supporting children who are on modified programs, working with students in a social group and developing programs for children who require extension.
Leona and I work with small groups and manage the meetings and paperwork. We have the wonderful Aides; Mary Nolan, Jan Boyce, Angela Brackstone and Anny Domat providing class support.
This week we are involved in a Student Support Committee Meeting, so I thought it timely, to present the flow chart to our parent body.
Have a great week,
The Learning Support Team.
Yamma Group
As promised, the Yamma Group is taking on a massive project!
The area behind the Assembly Hall is a forgotten area of our school. Some have tried in the past to use this space, however, it has often become forgotten and messy.
NOT ANYMORE! The Yamma Group is coming to the rescue and we have BIG PLANS!
So far this term we have spent time looking at what is there, what we want to keep in the area and discussions around what we would like to add. We spent our first week of Yamma Group rolling up our selves and cleaning up the area. Last week we were indoors with our designing hats on, thinking about what we would like the area to look like. There are some great ideas, including the addition of some art work that we are getting ready to present to Mrs Pfingst.
Stay tuned to see how this project turns out!
