St Anthony's School - Term 4 Week 8 2021
Principal's News
Welcome to our last newsletter of our 2021 school year! In the busy-ness of our daily work, it can become challenging to acknowledge the importance of celebration. Society in general tends to define success by how much one completes and accumulates. At times it can feel as if we are caught in a cycle of rushing from one achievement to another. We must value our successes.
At St Anthony’s we are a strong and inclusive community – this is our greatest strength and it does not happen by accident. Every individual contributes to our success.
When people ask me why I do what I do, I always come back to my firmly held belief that education is one of those few occupations through which I can affect the greatest good for the greatest number. What we do at St Anthony’s each day has a positive impact on the futures of the young people in our care and, therefore, bodes well for the future of our world. Our students, our children, are world-changers.
Former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan stated: “Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rests the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.”
At St Anthony’s, so many noteworthy individual and collective activities take place each day. It is impossible to outline them all, but there have been many significant moments for students and staff this year.
- We have continued to embed a professional learning community in our school, where teachers regularly engage in professional dialogue and share their student’s successes and work together as a collective group to ensure the progress of students. Our school for 4 years now has tracked each individual student's reading progress on a whole school reading data wall. This data is often a focus of our PLC meetings and we can proudly say that all students have made reading progress this year……many quite significantly.
- Our 2021 NAPLAN data indicated growth across our Year 3 and 5 cohorts in all domains in Year 3 and most in Year 5. Our Year 3 spelling was the 8th highest performing school out of 31 in our diocese and 2nd out of 31 schools for grammar and punctuation.
- While we have a lot to celebrate, we never rest on our laurels, we are never complacent or are satisfied with meeting national minimum standards, rather we are ALWAYS analysing data to direct and pinpoint our teaching focus and addressing deficits and teaching to close gaps.
- This year our teachers have continued to implement the daily rigour of the Diocesan Reading Strategy and bring the same rigour to the Writing Improvement Strategy.
- We continue to embed our Lighthouse Numeracy Strategy, with a focus on vocabulary, student goals, inquiry hands-on maths learning and daily number talks.
- This year, we have continued to implement and reap the benefits of a re-structured learning support across the school. Intervention takes place in classroom or in intense small groups. Our learning support teachers, Ann and Leona are co-planning and analysing individual student data collaboratively with teachers to ensure students progress and gaps are closed and once again our data shows that this has been an effective implementation and effected significant growth in student outcomes.
- We were able to send two teams to the regional Opti-MINDS competition – a Language and Literature and Science and engineering team. Our Language and Literature team won their division overall and our Science and Engineering Team received honours.. Many thanks to Leigh Winters and Terri-An Nolan who gave up hours of their own time to ensure these teams were prepared.
- Our Year 6 class enjoyed a memorable school trip to Tangalooma.
- We’ve been able to continue to offer chess and instrumental music as extra curricular activities and have introduced the St Anthony’s Running Club which has been very popularly supported.
- Our classroom environments are conducive and our behaviour across the school low level. This is not by accident but by each staff member being committed to providing a community of kindness and care and an investment is providing whatever support is required for each individual whether that be academic, social or behavioural.
- We’ve been committed to the continual upgrade of resources of our buildings and classrooms and keeping our school well maintained and aesthetically appealing.
- This just gives you a taste of the outstanding educational opportunities, facilities and resources offered at St Anthony’s School.
This year, we have been developing and refining our ‘St Anthony’s Way’ with staff and students and we are ready to launch and embed this as our way of working at St Anthony’s from 2022 and beyond. Our Vision is always ‘Lighting Pathways for Life’ and this is through our 2 pathways…..

I would like to sincerely thank also, our Parent Partnership Forum regular attendees who are an active and engaged group of volunteer parents who so selflessly give of their time to help our school community – special mention to Tracey Page our Chairperson and Katie Rub our secretary. We only have 6 regular attendees who are great supporters of our current students and staff and they work tirelessly and enthusiastically to ensure there are new and innovative ways to engage parents in the education journey of their children. These people have been so very supportive of us as a school and so interested and proactive in the future of St Anthony’s. We would certainly welcome every parent to these gatherings in 2022. This is a great way to gain firsthand insight also into the workings of the school.
I would like to make special mention of our Parish Priest, Fr Jamie Collins and Parish Co-ordinator Sr Maria Joyner who in my 4 years as Principal have been a tremendous support of me and our staff and students and invested in keeping a strong and vital connection between school and parish.
To Elizabeth and Kim, our gems in the office! There’s nothing these ladies can’t do and they have managed the challenges of many new systems this year with the utmost professionalism and still manage to greet anyone who comes through our door with respect and kindness!
Special thanks also to our highly skilled, supportive and competent Leadership team – Katie Hauser, Leona Doherty and Ann Foster who are such a tremendous support of me and our school and I deeply value their support, friendship, wisdom and expertise.
And now to the staff.
Confucius stated: “If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees. If your plan is for one hundred years, educate children.”
Teaching and learning are the core activities of a school. Great teachers are the most important ingredient to the success of our school.
Our staff are deeply invested in finding and nurturing the immense potential inside all students so that they are equipped to explore the boundless possibilities that lie ahead of them.
To do this takes determination, hard work and a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. I thank all of our teaching and support staff across our school who have invested so much of themselves and their tremendous expertise in the pursuit of this vision for the benefit of our students and our school. I count myself extremely privileged to work with such a dedicated team.
To all parents and caregivers, I thank you for your passionate support of all things St Anthony’s and for allowing us the opportunity to work in partnership with you to give the greatest gift of all, for all of our children – the gift of education.
I extend to all members of our School community my very best wishes for a peaceful Christmas and a refreshing and safe holiday and I look forward to welcoming those faces – new and old on Tuesday, 25th January for what is already shaping up to be another year of many successes for our school community in 2022.
2022 Class Structures
We are very excited to announce our staff and class structures for 2022.
Before the end of term, we will communicate with parents, your child’s 2022 class and teacher.
When we place students in a class, the only consideration with this placement is social and not academic. Each class whether straight or composite has a range of academic levels that are catered for by our capable and professional staff.
We have done our best to accommodate any class considerations and no changes can be made now.
Composite classes have been part of our fabric at St Anthony’s for many years. The most common fear for parents having a child in a composite class is that they will fall behind – that the teacher's attention will be split between the two years and they’ll get less overall learning time with their teacher. The research, however, doesn’t agree. Multiple studies conclude it makes no difference to performance whether students are in a straight year group or in a multi-age class. Experts agree the most important factor in determining how well a student does is the quality of the teacher and their teaching.
Additionally, it seems composite classes can actually enhance development; students becoming more confident and assertive, and learning to operate as part of a group while bolstering independent learning skills.
Let me introduce our 2022 staff………

Peta has been teaching at Mary Mackillop Catholic College for the past 5 years.
Both Pam and Peta are very excited to be joining our St Anthony’s Team.

We sincerely thank these ladies for the many ways they have contributed to our St Anthony’s team and we wish them all the best in their new ventures
Year 6 Mosaic
If you haven’t done so yet, make sure you check out in person the most spectacular mosaic adorning our front office entranceway. This was a vision of Mrs Winters and with the help of 2 very talented community artists, Lee Fullarton and Denise Chardon, this dream became a reality.
Each student is symbolised with a representation created by themselves. There is a cross and at the heart of the cross is a lantern to represent our ‘Lighting Pathways for Life’ and our connection to our school charism and Nano Nagle – representing how we can be the light for others.
There is also a music note, 2 people with a ball - representing the many sporting opportunities available to students, 2 masks - representing our focus on the arts, a book with a heart – representing our St Anthony’s ‘Love of Learning’, St Anthony, campfire – representing our connection to various cultures, the earth – representing our stewardship of creation and 2 people holding a heart – representing our ‘Love of one another’.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our Christmas Concert and Fair this evening, commencing at 5.30pm. This event is all systems go for this evening, commencing at 5.30pm. We will do a weather assessment as late in the day as possible, but it is most likely that the concert and jumping castle will be in the sports hall and stalls along the verandas and in the assembly hall. All the food vans will still be here! Can’t wait to see you all there!
Continue to check the portal over the Christmas break, particularly in January for updates pertaining to our new school year!
God Bless……until next year,
Louise

Presentation Day
Today as a school we celebrated the feast of the Presentation of Mary. This day is an important day to reflect upon the Presentation Sisters that taught at St Anthony’s from it’s beginning in 1955 to the 1990s. The founder of the sisters, Nano Nagle, lived in the 18th Century in Ireland and began her work educating poor children in Cork with a small group of women by her side. From these humble beginnings began a legacy of Presentation sisters teaching children all over the world, inspired by the joyful acceptance of Mary to say yes to God. Nano Nagle said yes to God. She chose to put others ahead of her own needs and brought the good news of Jesus to the poorest people in Ireland. We all can strive to be Presentation people who say yes to God. We acknowledged in our assembly today students who follow in the footsteps of Jesus and Nano Nagle in how they live their lives.
As this is the final newsletter of the year, it is timely to reflect upon all we have achieved this year but also a time to look forward in anticipation to what is to come. On the last day of school, we will celebrate as a community and acknowledge the work and commitment of the students and staff of St Anthony’s. A student from each class will receive an award for ‘Most Consistent’ and ‘Most Improved’. Year Six students will be acknowledged with sporting, cultural, academic and Christian living awards presented. During this liturgy we will also spend time reflecting upon the achievements of all students and how each individual member of our community adds a unique dimension to this wonderful place. Just like a puzzle with a piece missing; it is not complete. The community would not have been what it was this year without all the pieces of the puzzle fitting together to make a whole. To our Year 6 students, staff and any families leaving the school we wish you all the blessings. Having journeyed along the St Anthony’s Way for however long, I pray that the pathway that has been ignited by your time here will continue to shine bright. May you use your light to be a beacon for your true self and offer it to others along the way.
This weekend marks the first Sunday in Advent, a time in the Church calendar when we pause, reflect and prepare for the gift of God’s love coming to us through the baby Jesus. As we prepare for Christmas we can get caught up in the business of shopping, decorating, cooking, end of year parties, ticking off to do lists. The concept of Advent is to prepare ourselves, to get ready to receive the good news that God loves us, just as we are which is reaffirmed each year as we listen to the story of Jesus birth. Wishing you and your family a joyous Christmas and a relaxing, refreshing break to recharge and renew.

Report Cards and Assessment
Your child’s Semester Two report cards will be available on the portal next week. Last week a message was sent on the portal with a link to a Parent Presentation prepared to explain assessment and the reporting scale we use within Toowoomba Catholic Schools. Please access this virtual presentation at your leisure if you are interested in finding out more about your child’s progress in relation to their report card.
Academic progress is obviously one of the pillars of any school. The ‘Love of Learning’ pathway we have explored with students and the community this year acts as our guideposts for developing this academic achievement. Progress in this pathway may not always be reflected in a stand-alone grade awarded in a report card. For example, a student’s persistence may not be rewarded with an A, if that A is out of their reach at that time. However, looking at a student’s effort grade may help to give further perspective on their progress. A student with A’s for effort would certainly be a student that I would imagine has persevered, engaged in the process of learning and showed curiosity.

Prep KJ & SJ
Wow!! What a fantastic year we have had in Prep! Welcome to our final newsletter happenings for 2021. We’ve been having lots of fun in the classroom doing Christmas themed Math and English activities and some pretty spectacular art and craft as well. In religion, the children have been learning about Advent and the coming of Jesus. Before the end of the term, we are planning a catch up with our buddies, to say thank you for their friendship and looking after us this year. We are well into rehearsals on stage for our Prep Christmas Play which will be performed for parents next Tuesday, 30th November at 12pm in the hall. Our final Assembly/Liturgy will be in the Sports Hall on Friday, 4th December at 10am. If your child is leaving after liturgy, it is a requirement that you sign them out at the office. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who have helped and supported us this year. Have a blessed Christmas and a relaxing break.

What an exciting end to the year! I’d love to start by saying thank you to all parents who have donated to the toy raffle for the Christmas Concert and Fair and the Mini Vinnies food drive. Your generosity has been so appreciated.
As you know Report Cards are heading home in Week 8. The Students have grown so much across the year and all children should be proud of their achievements.
On a personal note I have really enjoyed working with your children this year and I thank you for all your communication and support.
The last week of school will be busy. Books will start to come home as we finish off units of work. Keep checking the portal for information regarding end of year festivities.
I wish you a safe and relaxing holiday.
P.S. Don’t forget to keep your children reading and writing over the holidays ready for the new year.

Season’s Greetings from 1KS!
It is finally that time of year again! The season of Advent is upon us and we begin our preparations for Christmas. As 1KS prepares for Christmas, I’d like to quickly remind you of the opportunity to spread some Christmas Cheer by donating to our St Vincent de Paul hamper. Year 1 has been asked to provide breakfast items. We have a couple of boxes of cereal and a pancake mix but could do with many more donations.
We have formally finished any new learning – except for new learnings about Advent and Christmas – and we will be doing many activities to practise our skills gained during the year, during the final two weeks of term. These tasks will have a Christmas flavour but will be important in reviewing and maintaining our literacy and numeracy skills. As holidays approach, please remember that any opportunities that arise for reading, writing stories and journals / diaries are great to keep the children on the forward path for learning. They will make the return to school easier for students, teacher and parents!
Finally, thank you to 1KS families for making my time with your children such a pleasure. I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to spend my days working with your beautiful children and teaching them new and interesting things and revising the important concepts from earlier in the year.
Have a Blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year! See you all in 2022!!

Well that’s a wrap for Year 2!
What a busy end of the year it has been - for the last 8 weeks the students have worked tirelessly to finalise their assessment in every Key Learning Area. They should be so proud of what they have achieved, and how much they have grown.
Thank you to every single student & parent of 2OT for making my first year as a teacher such an enjoyable experience. These little people have definitely changed my life, and I am so excited to hear about all of their successes in Year 3.
Thank you to the class of 2OT, you’re all one of a kind and I have loved being your teacher.
Thanks,

Welcome to our last entry for the newsletter for the year. I can barely believe it myself. Firstly, a huge thank you to all our parents for your support this year. Growth, both academically and emotionally, does not happen if school and home do not work together, so thank you. We have had a busy, but excellent year with students stepping up the expectations from both Emma and me. I would say a highlight is the impressive reading growth across the whole class. It is amazing to see everyone move and excel in this area. I would also say that this class has risen to the expectation of being a ‘learner’. This is an amazing skill that I hope they take with them next year and beyond in their learning. I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday!

Well, we have reached the end of another year! Your children have learnt a LOT and have grown a LOT! It has been such a privilege to spend this time with them. We will now be starting to send home books and other items that we have finished with, to lighten the load at the end of the year. This year we have decided that if your child wishes to bring cards to share for their classmates, they will all be collected in a special bag to be taken home on the last day. This will allow you to monitor the consumption of any foods that may also be gifted. Have a safe holiday period and a merry Christmas.

4SC elves have been busy getting ready for our Christmas Fair. Our afternoons have been filled with making our amazing crafts to sell on Thursday night. We have also been working hard to complete all outstanding assessment in preparation for reporting. Many of us are becoming experts at various types of poetry. Prose is a particular favourite as it does not have to rhyme and paints a beautiful picture for the reader using imaginative language. We look forward to our last six days of learning in Year 4. Wishing all our families a blessed Christmas and a joyful New Year. Bring on Year 5 in 2022! God Bless. Mrs Cox

Oh parents, oh parents,
how caring you are!

Your smile puts me at ease.

Am I the person you love?
Or the person you think is shy?
Am I the sunny days
Or the cold gloomy days?

Am I the annoying girl?

Am I the weirdo you hate?
Or the nice warm girl you love.
Who Am I? by Lauren
I am made from many generations of love.
I am made out of strength, hope and happiness.
Inside I hold family holidays, friends’ handshakes and an enjoyment of memories.
I hold sour words from ignited fights and arguments,
Painful thoughts I just can’t get out of my head.
I am fearless.
I have a happy life.
I am made from all these memories and moments.
That is who
I am.

To our dear 4/5 families,
A huge congratulations to Phoebe who received our class Nano Nagle Award for always working her hardest and showing kindness and respect to everyone in our class and school.
It has been a great year for our class and thinking back to the earliest days of Term 1, your child has come a very long way and learned and played their way to confidence and success. So, as our year together comes to a close, we send the children home to you for a very well-deserved break and beautiful time of discovery and growth with family and friends. We would like to thank you warmly for the support and appreciate the kindness you have given to us throughout the year and wish you all of Christ’s blessings and peace, love and joy to your family this Christmas.
All our best for a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, Happy New Year!

We have finally made it to the end of what has been a very busy year. Just because we are coming to the end, doesn’t mean we are slowing down though. This week we have had a class discussion/debate about a question/topic that was raised by a student earlier in the year. The question was posed, ‘Why do we need to continue saying sorry to the First Nations People if the government has already said it and we personally didn’t do anything.’ This was a brave question to ask and one that sparked a wonderful, insightful conversation in our class. I was very impressed with the mature position that all the students took throughout the discussion and how open they were to listen to others’ ideas and opinions. By the end of the discussion, we acknowledged that this is a bigger conversation then just us and there are always going to be people that either agree or disagree and that is one of the wonderful freedoms we are afforded here in Australia. Our agreed upon answer by the end of the discussion, however, was that on National Sorry Day, the act of saying sorry isn’t a traditional sorry, like when you kick someone. It is an acknowledgement of the past and a promise to do better in the future.
I am so proud of how our class has worked together throughout the year and supported each other to achieve some wonderful goals. Over the coming days we will celebrate and farewell our Year 6 classmates, share in a class celebration for good behaviour, pack up our books for the end of the year and say goodbye to 2021. I can’t wait to see what each and everyone of 5/6TN make of the future and the opportunities that are afforded to them.
Thank you again for the opportunity to work with your children this year and I wish each and every one of you’re a Safe and Merry Holiday Season.
Until Next Year.

YR 6 LW
As we conclude another year, I find myself looking back and reflecting on how much we have achieved. I am incredibly proud of how everyone in Year 6 has grown this year –both academically and physically! I have seen a surge in confidence, work ethics and maturity. As “my”Year 6 students end their time at primary school, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate every one of them for the outstanding way that they have been the school leaders this year. As they say farewell to their primary years, I am confident they are ready for the challenges that await them in high school –and I can’t wait to hear the stories of future successes!
